The wait is over – Rocket League is starting a new era today and is free-to-play across all platforms! Rocket League appeared over five years ago as the successor to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars and made car football socially acceptable without Stefan Raab.
An eSports scene quickly developed around the game, which is still growing today and only reinvented itself this year.
Realignment at All Levels
Developer Psyonix has turned the system inside out for the competitive side of the game after increased criticism from fans and professional teams. The league model and the semi-annual structure have been abolished.
Now there is an open, event-based system through which the participants of the annual Rocket League World Championship are determined. A whopping $4.5 million in prize money will also be made available over the course of the season.

With this, Psyonix hopes to bring a breath of fresh air to the scene and at the same time win back the large eSports organizations. The RLCS X is well received by the general public and offers the action that defines the game.
In July, it was announced that the game would be a free-to-play title. This is accompanied by crossplay between Steam and the Epic Games Store, progress is saved on all platforms in parallel. This should particularly please the Playstation users who received the game as a free full version as part of a PS Plus membership.
Rocket League Legacy
Those and players who have paid for the game do not go away empty-handed. They receive the Legacy status, which has a lot of content ready:
- All Rocket League DLC (previously available for real money) that were released prior to Free to Play
- The “Est. 20XX” title, which shows which year you have been playing the game
- 200+ common items upgraded to Legacy quality
- The golden Cosmos Boost
- Dieci-Oro wheels
- The Huntress player banner
For more variety, however, new challenges should provide more or less easy-to-earn rewards. In addition, the main menu has been significantly simplified and should be made understandable to more users.

Playstation and Nintendo Switch players also benefit from the lifting of the mandatory subscription. From now on, the game can be played online on both systems without a paid membership.
Fortnite Party to Start
In celebration of Rocket League’s free-to-play launch, Epic Games has announced a special “Llama-Rama” crossover event for Fortnite. The festivities include a concert by a Rocket League fan favorite and some special in-game rewards for both games.
At the same time as the event, there will also be matching “Llama Rama Challenges” in Fortnite and Rocket League.
For example, Rocket League players can receive special in-game Fortnite items when completing challenges. Likewise, Fortnite players can receive Rocket League-themed items as part of the same challenges.
